Design Rhetoric: Deconstructing Grid

I am interested in the grid system, because it is the backbone to editorial design. Upon research on the history and the way grid system has evolved, I found that the initial stage of grid development is very closely linked with words and linguistic. This nature is mainly because the grid system is studied and practiced systematically by typographers and printers before the innovation of computer. Sometimes words are treated as images too, which can bear meaning or just be purely visual. The relationship between grid and text is something I would like to explore.

The relationship between grid and haptic is another research idea. This is based on one of my experimentation from Design Literacy — Visual and Haptic. The grid system within graphic design is mostly viewed as a two-dimensional design. Part of my experimentation will involve cutting and folding paper based on the application of the grid system. This would demonstrate another semi-sculptural aspect of paper, at the same time presenting alternative way to deconstruct the grid system, stir away from purely two-dimensional function. Text may be present in further stage of development.
